Pronouns: He, She and They

After the lesson, the students should be able to
1. know the difference between He, She and They
2. memorize at least five verbs
3. and make simple sentences.

These are the sentences in the presentation:
She is singing.
They are dancing.
He is jumping.
She is eating.
He is sleeping.
They are reading.
He is writing.
He is swimming.
They are playing.
  • You can play guessing games and ask the students to guess what you're doing.
  • Repetition is the key! I always ask them to repeat after me until they memorize.
  • Evaluation is important. Worksheets are helpful in assessing if the students have learned.

It is, They are

I made this presentation for pre-school.

After the lesson the students must be able to:
1. use "it is" and "they are"
2. tell the different kinds of taste (sweet, sour, salty and bitter)
3. and make simple sentences

It's like two lessons in one. ;)

Basic Classroom Commands

I used this presentation for my pre-school class. Pre-school students have very short attention span so I usually spend the time, watching videos, singing and dancing. I used the "Teddy Bear Song" and "Five Little Monkeys" in teaching some of the commands.

These are the commands I included in this presentation:
1. Stand up
2. Sit down
3. Clap your hands
4. Stamp your feet
5. Turn around
6. Jump

Of course they already know how to do those things, the challenge for EFL teachers is to know the native language of the students and translate it in English.

Resources coming soon!

It's been months since I posted something new. I became so busy making some presentations for my classes. I've been putting so much effort in those presentations because I know that I will use them again in the future. I'm planning to upload some presentations and exercises here. I hope it will help other teachers, especially those who are too busy to make their own presentations.

Let me know if you have requests.

Love,
Teacher Karla

WIS Teachers Day

It was a normal day at school. We had classes in the morning. The Student Council asked us to go to the cafeteria because they prepared lunch for us.
After the pizza lunch, they asked us to change clothes (hmmm!). We were asked to go to the assembly hall. Students gave special numbers and sweet messages to us.

They grouped us randomly into two. An amazing race was organized by the students. :)

We ran! (Bibo teachers)

I can still remember running in skirt. HAHAHA!

We had to shoot a ball. (I can only shoot when it's graded! LOL )

and some more balls! This is like beer pong, without a beer! :P

They prepared a lot of stations!

We solved math problems! ^^,

and puzzles!

The teachers really enjoyed the games.

They gave us some prizes too.

The event ended by a flash mob.

I'll make another post about the presents I received from my sweet grade 5 students. <3

JCS Teachers Day

It started with a cupcake and a note. I know this day would be different.
I went to their classroom. Some students blindfolded me. It was the start of an amazing race. Two students guided me to go down the stairs. We went to different stations. I was asked to eat something, to dance (HAHAHA), and  to answer some questions. I found myself in the covered court after several stations. They removed my blindfold and a video presentation played.
I was really touched by their effort. These kids spent time in making the Teachers Day very special. I felt that all my efforts were appreciated. This day is one of my best days in Jabez Christian School.

After the short program, I went back to the faculty room and saw some sweets in my table. My kids really know how to make me feel special.
Among all these gifts, this medal really inspired me to be the "best teacher" for them.

Teachers Day

It's my first time to "celebrate" Teachers Day outside the country. Well, I didn't actually celebrated it. I just stayed at home because it was my day off. I washed some clothes, and cleaned my place. While cleaning, I saw some letters from my former students. Reading those letters made me feel how sweet it is to be a teacher.
Thanks Crizzy!

It's not the spelling nor the grammar, It's the thought that counts. :">  I have some students who never get tired of reminding me that I'm pretty (even at my haggard moments). It feels so good to be loved by them.

Thanks Ysa!
I'm glad  that my students know that I don't dislike them. I really love being with them. I treat them as my babies or younger siblings. As much as possible, I want them to enjoy the learning activities in class.

The greetings meant a lot for me. I'm thankful that my former students remembered to greet me. :">

PS
I'll make another post about my experience in the Philippines during Teachers Day.

I miss you baby! See you in Edmodo. ;)

Love,
Teacher Karla

Jiya Racal

Dear Jiya,

Love,
Teacher Karla

PS.
I'm glad that you know the difference of "its and it's" and "your and you're." :)

Teacher Karla's schedule

My Schedule in Philippines:

My Schedule in Korea:

My schedule and work load here is way better than my past schedule. I think all teachers deserve this kind of schedule. There should be more preparation time than the actual teaching.

Karla seonsaengnim

Dear students/readers/followers,

Annyeong Haseyo!

It's been a while since I posted something on this blog. I've been busy processing my papers to Korea. Yeah, you heard it right. I'm now a teacher in Korea! :)

I arrived here last August 27, 2015. I can't believe I've been here for almost two weeks now. I'm enjoying my stay here.

I miss my students in the Philippines. I'm so happy whenever they send me messages using Edmodo or Facebook. I'll try to reply to your love letters whenever I have free time (and I do have free time!). I only have 9 classes and I meet them just once a week. I'm so glad to be here. I have less work and more pay than in my previous job. LOL.

I'll post my replies to your messages soon! Saranghae! <3

Love,

Reading Comprehension, the “Fourth-Grade Slump,” and Expository Text

  Explanation:
Our graphic organizer is called ‘Back to Basics’ taken from the ‘Back to School’ sign in a certain bookstore supplies. As you can see, we have schools supplies representing the ideas in the text. The book contains the stages undergone by a reader whenever he/she reads a text resulting to comprehension. The apple represents the strategies that will help the reader to understand what he/she is reading and that will aid the teacher in assisting the learner during reading activity. The scissors facing the notebook signifies the problems encountered in comprehending written texts. It is facing the notebook because it presents why Fourth-Grade learners experience problems in comprehension especially in expository text. The book states ‘good readers use reading comprehension strategies’ when they read either narrative or expository text. Back to Basics is looking back as early as in the Fourth-Grade why learners in the higher academic level still suffer difficulty in comprehending expository text, wherein they are exposed too much to those kinds. Moreover, we are looking for possible solution on how to lessen those problems by suggesting strategies in reading.

 Reflection as Students:

It is true that reading stories are a lot easier than reading the written text. We enjoy because most of the time we can relate our life with the stories. We find the content areas in  reading quite challenging, especially in math and science because of the many new terminologies that we encounter while reading. Moreover, we cannot relate much because we don’t see or use them often in our life. Furthermore, because of our lack interest in reading written text, we don’t give much time to read or if we read, we just force ourselves to do so to meet with the academic requirements. Hence, we don’t enjoy reading and find it meaningful in life. We think that motivation to read is very important and we should vary our reading to different reading content areas and not just reading stories so we can develop widely our knowledge in all if not in most of the reading content areas. We agree that the more we read, the more we learn and the more knowledge we have the more we find our learning easier. “The rich get richer” holds true to readers who have acquired a good background of reading knowledge and continue to develop their reading skills.

Reflection as Teachers:

As teachers, we value the importance of reading not only in our field of teaching but also in the other content areas so that we can be more resourceful and flexible in our teaching. We should be aware of the changes in the academic areas, especially in education, society and
political as well as economic fields. We should update ourselves with the current issues in society.

We should equip ourselves with different reading comprehension strategies so as to help our students, especially the grade 4 learners and above to make sense of reading expository text which is so different from stories or narrative texts.  We should be role models first to our students, help them to be aware of the different text structures, motivate them to learn new vocabularies so as to have good vocabulary knowledge and to use question to connect to prior knowledge, organize the text structure as well as to review and extend the text.

As teachers, we feel happy when our students show understanding in learning new lessons, in reading text with ease and in participating in the learning process actively. We want in as much as we can to help our students improve their comprehension skills especially those who are still struggling with expository text. We are convinced that to become good and knowledgeable readers, we keep on reading and exposing ourselves to different kinds of reading materials applying comprehension strategies to aid and develop our reading comprehension skills.

Studying Text

Explanation of the Dress Graphic Organizer:
In studying text, it is necessary to know the text structure, study strategies, and study guides. The text structure, whether it is internal or external, improves the learning and retention of the readers. It helps the readers identify the important information and increase the comprehension of the text.
Moreover, study strategies can help the readers understand the text. The use of graphic organizers depicts the relationship in the text. Writing summaries is another strategy. Summaries helps the readers identify the main points of the text. Lastly, making and taking notes will help the readers recall the information. Text annotations like summary note, thesis note, critical note, and question note are some examples of notes that readers can write in the index card or sticky notes.
Study guides like text pattern guide and selective reading guide are also helpful in studying text. Text pattern guide is the story maps in narratives and the outlines in informational texts while selective reading guide is similar to end-of chapter comprehension questions, which focuses upon specific passages.

Reflections:
Reading is one of the five macro-skills in language that should be developed. It has always been a dilemma for teachers like me on how to teach reading students in higher elementary and junior high school. Not everyone likes reading. Those students who like reading would rather read fiction stories than those in their textbooks. Teaching the students enjoy reading is really a challenge not only for English teachers but also for teachers in other subject matters.
The dress graphic organizer I made shows some strategies on how to study texts easily. It shows how important the use of graphic organizer, note taking, and writing summaries are. I think it is necessary to teach those strategies to the students. Some textbooks incorporate the use of these graphic organizers but because of time constraints, some teachers tend to neglect its importance.
As a teacher, I think I need to allot time to teach my students on how to make graphic organizers for informational texts. Although I already taught them the elements of a story in English and in Filipino, teaching them how to make outlines from expository texts will also improve their reading comprehension skills.
As a graduate student, I think selective reading guide will always work for me because professors always assign long readings. In making reflection paper like this, it is best to focus on the important points of the texts.
