Pronouns: He, She and They

After the lesson, the students should be able to
1. know the difference between He, She and They
2. memorize at least five verbs
3. and make simple sentences.

These are the sentences in the presentation:
She is singing.
They are dancing.
He is jumping.
She is eating.
He is sleeping.
They are reading.
He is writing.
He is swimming.
They are playing.
  • You can play guessing games and ask the students to guess what you're doing.
  • Repetition is the key! I always ask them to repeat after me until they memorize.
  • Evaluation is important. Worksheets are helpful in assessing if the students have learned.

It is, They are

I made this presentation for pre-school.

After the lesson the students must be able to:
1. use "it is" and "they are"
2. tell the different kinds of taste (sweet, sour, salty and bitter)
3. and make simple sentences

It's like two lessons in one. ;)

2. pig
3. horse
4. cow
5. dog

8. duck
9. sheep
10. mouse
11. rabbit

You can use songs like "Old McDonald had a farm", and "The animals on the Farm"

Old MacDonald had a farm, E I E I O.
And on this farm he had a pig, E I E I O
With an oink, oink, here and an oink, oink there.
Everywhere an oink, oink.
Old MacDonald had a farm, E I E I O.

(Continue singing about other farm animals)
Cow – moo, moo
Horse – neigh, neigh

I used finger puppets in introducing the animals, at the last part, I let them make their own.

Basic Classroom Commands

I used this presentation for my pre-school class. Pre-school students have very short attention span so I usually spend the time, watching videos, singing and dancing. I used the "Teddy Bear Song" and "Five Little Monkeys" in teaching some of the commands.

These are the commands I included in this presentation:
1. Stand up
2. Sit down
3. Clap your hands
4. Stamp your feet
5. Turn around
6. Jump

Of course they already know how to do those things, the challenge for EFL teachers is to know the native language of the students and translate it in English.

Few years from now, I'm going to read this blog. I'll tell myself how blessed I am to have this kind of workload and a reasonable salary. God's grace is sufficient. He never fails to amaze me.

WIS Teachers Day

It was a normal day at school. We had classes in the morning. The Student Council asked us to go to the cafeteria because they prepared lunch for us.
After the pizza lunch, they asked us to change clothes (hmmm!). We were asked to go to the assembly hall. Students gave special numbers and sweet messages to us.

They grouped us randomly into two. An amazing race was organized by the students. :)

We ran! (Bibo teachers)

I can still remember running in skirt. HAHAHA!

We had to shoot a ball. (I can only shoot when it's graded! LOL )

and some more balls! This is like beer pong, without a beer! :P

They prepared a lot of stations!

We solved math problems! ^^,

and puzzles!

The teachers really enjoyed the games.

They gave us some prizes too.

The event ended by a flash mob.

I'll make another post about the presents I received from my sweet grade 5 students. <3

JCS Teachers Day

It started with a cupcake and a note. I know this day would be different.
I went to their classroom. Some students blindfolded me. It was the start of an amazing race. Two students guided me to go down the stairs. We went to different stations. I was asked to eat something, to dance (HAHAHA), and  to answer some questions. I found myself in the covered court after several stations. They removed my blindfold and a video presentation played.
I was really touched by their effort. These kids spent time in making the Teachers Day very special. I felt that all my efforts were appreciated. This day is one of my best days in Jabez Christian School.

After the short program, I went back to the faculty room and saw some sweets in my table. My kids really know how to make me feel special.
Among all these gifts, this medal really inspired me to be the "best teacher" for them.

Teachers Day

It's my first time to "celebrate" Teachers Day outside the country. Well, I didn't actually celebrated it. I just stayed at home because it was my day off. I washed some clothes, and cleaned my place. While cleaning, I saw some letters from my former students. Reading those letters made me feel how sweet it is to be a teacher.
Thanks Crizzy!

It's not the spelling nor the grammar, It's the thought that counts. :">  I have some students who never get tired of reminding me that I'm pretty (even at my haggard moments). It feels so good to be loved by them.

Thanks Ysa!
I'm glad  that my students know that I don't dislike them. I really love being with them. I treat them as my babies or younger siblings. As much as possible, I want them to enjoy the learning activities in class.

The greetings meant a lot for me. I'm thankful that my former students remembered to greet me. :">

PS
I'll make another post about my experience in the Philippines during Teachers Day.

Ysabelle Aguila

Dear Ysa,

Thanks for the very creative letter. :)
I think I know the reason why but I can't tell it to you because you're too young to understand it. Maybe few years from now, we can talk about life over a cup of coffee.
I miss you baby! See you in Edmodo. ;)

Love,
Teacher Karla

Jiya Racal

Dear Jiya,

Thanks for the very sweet letter! You may be noisy sometimes but I know that you are listening. By the way I will not "live" in WIS. hehehe. I'm glad that we spent a month together.
I love you too baby! Stay cool and cute! I really like your hairrr! ;)

Love,
Teacher Karla

PS.
I'm glad that you know the difference of "its and it's" and "your and you're." :)

Teacher Karla's schedule

My Schedule in Philippines:

My Schedule in Korea:

My schedule and work load here is way better than my past schedule. I think all teachers deserve this kind of schedule. There should be more preparation time than the actual teaching.

Karla seonsaengnim

Dear students/readers/followers,

Annyeong Haseyo!

It's been a while since I posted something on this blog. I've been busy processing my papers to Korea. Yeah, you heard it right. I'm now a teacher in Korea! :)

I arrived here last August 27, 2015. I can't believe I've been here for almost two weeks now. I'm enjoying my stay here.

I miss my students in the Philippines. I'm so happy whenever they send me messages using Edmodo or Facebook. I'll try to reply to your love letters whenever I have free time (and I do have free time!). I only have 9 classes and I meet them just once a week. I'm so glad to be here. I have less work and more pay than in my previous job. LOL.

I'll post my replies to your messages soon! Saranghae! <3

Love,

Teacher Karla

Reflecting on the Natural Approach

Natural approach aims to teach the second language in the classroom setting with more emphasis on the communication than the grammar. Since this method is developed by Stephen Krashen and Tracy Terell, we can associate this method with Krashen’s monitor model.
I think it is associated with the Input Hypothesis which is concerned with the acquisition rather than the learning. The Natural approach values the fluency rather than the accuracy. When the students engage in meaningful conversations, they can acquire the language. The natural approach and the input hypothesis believe the learners will improve by understanding the messages or by receiving the comprehensible input.
Krashen’s ideas may also apply in the situation where I am teaching. I’m teaching in an international school. The classroom is composed of students with different L1. English is the common language among us. Although most of them are native speakers of English, some of their classmates use English as their second language or as their foreign language.
I found out that the most applicable for my students is the affective filter hypothesis. It is important that the students are highly motivated in order to acquire the knowledge. When the teacher gives them some praises, their self-confidence is being boosted. Another factor is the manner of correcting. When the students know that they will not be criticized when they make mistakes, their level of anxiety will be lesson. These situations can lead to better understanding of the language.

Among the five main hypothesis of Krashen’s theory on SLA, I think that I will have a hard time in applying the input hypothesis. The input hypothesis claims that people acquire language best from messages that are just slightly beyond their current competence. I believe that in my classroom setting, the students don’t have the same level of competence. Of course the native speakers have an edge compared to their Japanese or Korean classmate. It is a challenge for me to design the learning activities that will be fair for my students.

The Adventures of English

Honestly, I don’t have a background of the development of English. My undergrad course is BS Development Communication. I just took 18 units of Professional Education to be qualified to take the LET.  Watching this series really gave me an idea about the development of English.
Thank God for holiday, I was able to do a marathon of this series. I’m not a fan of history but I swear, I tried my best not to sleep to understand the documentary. I know that it will really help me to understand the structure of English.
The series explained that the development of English is influenced by the historical events. Romans invaded the Britain. The Goths kick out Romans. Picts and Scots from Ireland attacked the Britons. Angles, Saxons, and other German settlers arrive in Britain to assist the Britons and claim the territory. The invaders who speak West Germanic dialect established many of the essential characteristics of the English language. Studying the literary text would really help us in order to understand how the language has been developed. At the same time, knowing the history can also help us understand the literary texts better.
There was also discrimination among the languages. Like for example, they say that French is the language of the elite; Old English is the language of the common people; and Latin is the language of the people in academe or church.
I am also fascinated about the difference of American and British English. Besides some spelling discrepancies, they also have different terms for a certain thing. British use lift instead of elevator. They live in a flat instead of apartment. It’s amazing that they use different terms for things yet they understand each other.
For the past years, many dictionaries were published. English is now a worldwide language. The native speakers, the second language users and the foreign language users may have some differences in the way they use the English language but what important is that they are able to communicate with each other.
There are different kinds of English language. For me, fluency is more important than the accuracy of using the language. Using the English language will make it more dynamic. I believe that the English language will continue developing and it will not end up like Latin.
